Photography as a tourism strategy for tourism professionals

Photography is a powerful tool for tourism professionals to attract visitors and promote their destination. Indeed, images are often the first thing people see when they’re looking to find out more about a destination, and they can help spark the desire to travel and influence the final choice of destination.

With quality images, tourism professionals can convey the essence and atmosphere of a destination, showing people what they can expect to see and experience on their trip. Photography can also highlight popular tourist activities and attractions, historical and cultural sites, landscapes, accommodation & catering, restaurants, bars and stores.

However, it’s crucial to remember that images must be real and representative of the destination to avoid disappointing visitors. Photos should be clear, sharp and colorful to give a positive image of the destination.

By using a consistent photography strategy, tourism professionals can reinforce their brand and message. Images can be used on websites, social networks, brochures and billboards to help achieve marketing and sales objectives. In addition to visuals, consider video to extend the reach of your campaigns.

What’s more, tourism professionals can also take advantage of photography to create targeted advertising campaigns to reach their target audience. By using attractive travel images, they can encourage people to plan a trip to their destination. For a local focus, see tourism photographer in Caen and our regional offer in Normandy.

Go behind the scenes of tourism photography!

Tourism photography offers a multitude of different possibilities and services. There are many reasons why a tourist organization might call on the services of a photographer, from reporting on an accommodation service, to showcasing a region, to staging a leisure area.

Like all specialties, this field requires certain skills, precautions and organizational abilities of its own. Photo 911 has acquired a certain amount of experience in this sector over the years, and we hope to share some of it with you in this article.

Humanity and emotion at the heart of photography!

Tourism appeals to notions of pleasure, relaxation, leisure and disconnection. In short, anything that might take a person away from their daily routine for a few days or weeks. Whether it’s a period of great rest or, on the contrary, of intense activity. One thing’s for sure: when you go on vacation, you need to experience something new, and above all, you need to feel a sense of satisfaction that you won’t find anywhere else.

These include the pleasure of finding yourself in an ultra-comfortable cocoon in an unusual location, or being able to devote 100% of your time to your family. And all this translates into emotions and sensations.

The photographer ‘s role is to capture as accurately as possible all those little or big clues that evoke the happiness of a person on vacation. But it’s not enough to discreetly photograph people on vacation.

Image rights

Everyone has the right to privacy, it’s a fundamental notion. This is especially true when you’re on vacation. It’s totally understandable if someone refuses to be photographed when they’re resting or with their family. Other solutions must be found, and there is one that has proved its worth, although it requires particular rigor on the part of both customer and photographer.

If you can’t photograph people without their consent, then you have to be able to ask for it. Going directly to holidaymakers and asking them to take part in the report might work in some cases, but there are certain constraints. Firstly, this technique would cause a certain amount of inconvenience; secondly, the number of people who would accept would be relatively low; and thirdly, there’s a big risk that no one would agree, jeopardizing the service. This technique should be avoided, especially as the choice of extras (yes, there is a selection to be made) is limited. The best solution is to recruit extras beforehand. Ideally, we’d like to recruit professionals, but when that’s not possible, we turn to those around us.

Customer image

Like any company or organization, a tourism business has its own image and, above all, its own world. This must be respected. A customer may have chosen to position himself in a particular segment, and everything the photographer captures must reflect this choice. This includes the services highlighted, the visual identity of the photographs, the attitude of the extras in the images, and even their direct selection.

The best solution is to clearly define with the customer what is optimal and, above all, what is forbidden. Let’s take the example of a company positioned in a high-end segment: it will try to avoid representing activities with a “popular” connotation, or will prefer a “CSP +” family, as this is its exact target.

Organizing a tourist photo service

The key word is anticipation! The last thing you want is to be caught short by the unexpected. A printed briefing to carry with you at all times is essential. This will include a detailed schedule of the various photo sessions and, above all, a detailed and realistic set of specifications. Every trip, whether international or local, must be planned in advance. You don’t want to find yourself lost with a family of extras without knowing exactly what to do. It also requires careful coordination between you and the customer. You have to think about the heart of the performance, even if it means imagining it precisely in your head. For example, if you need to photograph a family moment around a table, you need to think about the location, its availability, the furniture, the decorative food, the family, the placement of that family, the style of dress, the time of day, etc… The more you think about the details, the better your session will go. Having a local contact is ideal whenever possible.

But there’s always an element of the unexpected. Even with perfect organization, it can still happen that you’re caught out by the weather, by difficult conditions, by an extra who doesn’t turn up, etc. In this case, your ability to deal with such situations will be put to the test. For example, if no other solution is available, you may need to recruit people directly on site. However, we advise you to skip a planned session as little as possible: even if the ideal conditions are not met, it’s better to take the photos anyway.

Tourism photography is more than just travel photography. It’s not just landscape photography, although that’s part of it. Most customers will want to bring life to their image, and this means bringing their target directly into their communications. Staging with extras is therefore necessary in many cases. The key is to think of every detail that may or may not appear in the picture on the big day.
